Coverage

Essential circuits, or the whole house?

The first decision shapes everything else. Flip between the two to see what typically stays on in an outage.

Coverage level

Essential circuits

Keeps the things that matter in an outage running: heat, the fridge, the sump and well pumps, and lights in the rooms you use.

Usually means: A smaller generator and a transfer switch that powers selected circuits.

Whole house

Your home runs like the power never went out, central air and electric appliances included.

Usually means: A larger generator sized to your full load, often with load management for big appliances.

  3. 03

    The generator

A new Generac home standby generator, set, secured and ready to connect.

  4. 04

    Transfer switch

  5. 05

    Fuel

Natural gas or propane, planned with you based on what your home already has.

  6. 06

    Start-up & walkthrough

First start, a test under load, the weekly exercise set, and a walkthrough of how your system works.

The process

How a whole-house install comes together.

  1. Load review

Jamie looks at your panel and what you want running in an outage, then recommends a size.

  2. Plan and quote

You get a quote for the complete installation: generator, pad, transfer switch and wiring.

  3. Install

The unit is set, the transfer switch is wired in and the fuel connection is completed.

  4. Power on

Start-up, a full test under load, and a walkthrough of how your system works.

Fuel

Natural gas or propane?

Home standby generators run on either. The right choice usually comes down to what your house already has.

Natural gas

  • Runs from your utility gas line
  • No refills to schedule
  • Needs gas service at the house

Propane (LP)

  • Runs from a propane tank
  • Works where there’s no gas line
  • Tank size sets how long it can run

Installation questions

Before you plan an install.

Still have a question?

Jamie answers every call and request within one business day.

How much does a whole-house generator installation cost?

It depends on the generator size, your fuel type, the transfer switch and how much electrical work your panel needs. Jamie reviews your home and gives you a quote for the complete installation.

What size generator do I need?

That depends on what you want running during an outage. Jamie reviews your electrical load in person and recommends a size for essential circuits or the whole house.

Where can the generator go?

Outside, on a level pad, with the clearances from windows, doors, vents and the house that the manufacturer requires. Jamie picks a spot that meets those and works for your yard.

Will it start on its own when the power goes out?

Yes. With an automatic transfer switch, the generator senses the outage, starts, and takes over your home’s power, then hands back to the utility when power returns.

Do you install generators other than Generac?

New installations are Generac, as a Generac Authorized Dealer. Jamie services and repairs Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Champion and Cummins units too.
