What’s your electrical doing?
Pick what you’re noticing to see how urgent it is, what usually causes it, and what’s safe to do before you call.
Burning smell or smoke
Likely causes
- Overheating wiring, outlet or device
- A failing breaker or connection
What to do
- If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911
- If it’s safe, switch off the affected breaker or the main
- Don’t use the outlet, switch or appliance again until it’s checked
Outlet or switch is hot or scorched
Likely causes
- A loose or failing connection
- An overloaded circuit
What to do
- Unplug anything on it, if you can do so safely
- Switch off that circuit’s breaker
- Leave it off and book a repair
Got a shock or tingle
Likely causes
- A wiring fault or damaged device
- Missing grounding or GFCI protection
What to do
- Stop using that outlet, switch or appliance
- Switch off the circuit at the breaker
- Get it checked before using it again
A breaker keeps tripping
Likely causes
- Too much running on one circuit
- A faulty appliance
- A short or a failing breaker
What to do
- Unplug things on that circuit, then reset the breaker once
- If it trips again right away, leave it off
- Note what was running when it tripped
Lights flicker or dim
Likely causes
- A loose bulb or fixture connection
- Big loads starting up
- A loose connection at the panel
What to do
- Check the bulb is tight
- Note whether it’s one light, one room or the whole house
- If it’s the whole house, mention it when you call
An outlet stopped working
Likely causes
- A tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit
- A tripped breaker
- A worn or failed outlet

- Check the panel for a tripped breaker
- Still dead? Book a repair
Panel is full or out of date
Likely causes
- An older or undersized panel
- No room for new circuits
What to do
- Make a list of what you’d like to add: EV charger, generator, addition
- Book a panel check before the new project
I’m adding an EV, hot tub or generator

- New big loads need a dedicated circuit
- Panel capacity needs checking
What to do
- Note the equipment you’re planning
- Have Jamie check panel capacity before you buy
General guidance, not a diagnosis. If you see smoke, flames or sparks, get out and call 911. For downed lines, stay away and call your utility.

Common electrical questions.
Still have a question?
Jamie answers every call and request within one business day.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
Usually too much is running on one circuit, an appliance has a fault, or there’s a short. Unplug things and reset it once. If it trips again right away, leave it off and request a repair.
Do I need a panel upgrade?
You might if your panel is full, older, or can’t handle something new like an EV charger, generator or addition. Jamie can check your panel and tell you what it can support.
What does a whole-home surge protector do?
It mounts at your electrical panel and limits voltage spikes before they reach the circuits in your house, protecting appliances, electronics and the control boards in furnaces and air conditioners.
Can you install an EV charger at my house?
Yes. Jamie installs Level 2 chargers with a dedicated circuit, and checks first that your panel has the capacity for it.
Should I call 911 for an electrical problem?
If you see smoke, flames or sparks, or someone is hurt, get to safety and call 911. For downed power lines, stay far away and call your utility.
