Generator questions
What owners ask most.
Answers about maintenance, repairs and transfer switches. For anything else, ask Jamie.
Still have a question?
Jamie answers every call and request within one business day.
Do you service generators in Maryland?
Yes. Jamie Services handles standby generator maintenance and repair in Carroll County, MD, around Westminster, and in northern Baltimore County down to Towson.
What does a yearly generator service include?
A yearly service covers an oil and filter change, a new air filter and spark plugs as needed, a battery test, a check of the controller and connections, and a full run test so you know the generator will start and carry the load.
Can you service a generator that someone else installed?
Yes. Jamie services existing standby generators, including units installed by other companies, and works on Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Champion and Cummins.
Do I need a transfer switch?
Yes. A transfer switch safely moves your home from utility power to the generator and back. Standby generators use an automatic transfer switch; portable generators use a manual interlock or transfer switch with an inlet box.
What does the red light or error code on my generator mean?
It means the controller has detected a fault and stopped or locked out the generator. Write down the code or message shown on the display and request a repair. Jamie will diagnose the cause.
Will a standby generator run my central air or well pump?
It can, if the generator is sized for it. That is why every installation starts with a load review of what you want running during an outage.
How do I keep my generator ready between services?
Keep leaves, snow and mulch clear of the enclosure and vents, make sure the status light shows it is ready, and let it run its scheduled weekly exercise. If you see a warning light, call before the next outage.
Get ahead of the next outage.
Book yearly maintenance, get a repair on the schedule or start planning a whole-house generator. Jamie replies within one business day.
