Generac generator repair in York, PARed light? Won’t start? Let’s get it running.

Jamie diagnoses and repairs standby generators that won’t start, show an error code or sat silent through an outage. Generac is the specialty; Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Champion and Cummins are welcome too.

01

It won’t start

It cranks but never fires, clicks, or does nothing at all.

Common causes

  • A weak or failed battery, the most common cause
  • A fault on the controller that locked it out
  • Low oil, which trips the low-oil shutdown
  • A fuel supply issue: a closed valve or low propane
  • A worn starter, spark plug or ignition part

Safe to check

  • Look at the controller: is it showing a light or message?
  • Check that the generator isn’t switched to OFF
  • For propane, check the tank gauge

02

A red light or error code

The controller is showing an alarm, a warning or a code you don’t recognize.

Common causes

  • A protective shutdown: low oil, overheating, overspeed or overcrank
  • A battery or charger problem
  • A sensor or wiring fault
  • A maintenance reminder that’s come due

Safe to check

  • Write down the exact code or message, or take a photo
  • Note what color the status light is
  • Don’t keep clearing and restarting it; the code is a clue

03

It didn’t take over in an outage

The power went out and the generator stayed quiet, or ran without powering the house.

Common causes

  • The generator didn’t start (see above)
  • A transfer switch fault, so power never reached the house
  • A tripped breaker on the generator
  • The controller wasn’t set to automatic

Safe to check

  • Note whether the generator ran at all, or ran with the house still dark
  • Look for a tripped breaker on the generator
  • Check the controller is set to AUTO
Request a repair
04

It runs rough or shuts down

Surging, new noises, smoke, or it stops soon after starting.

Common causes

  • Old oil or a clogged air filter
  • A fuel pressure or regulator problem
  • Spark plug or ignition wear
  • Overloading during an outage

Safe to check

  • Note when it happens: at start-up, under load or after running a while
  • If you see smoke or smell fuel, shut it off and call
Request a repair

Safety first. Don’t open the enclosure while the generator can start on its own, and never work on the transfer switch or fuel line yourself. If you smell gas, leave the area and call your gas utility.

Read the panel

What the status light is telling you.

Most home standby controllers use a simple light to show their state. The exact labels vary by make and model; check your owner’s manual for yours.

GreenReady. Set to automatic and waiting for an outage.
YellowWarning or maintenance due. It may still run, but needs attention.
RedAlarm. The generator has shut down or locked itself out.

Repair questions

Before you call about a repair.

Still have a question?

Jamie answers every call and request within one business day.

How much does Generac generator repair cost?

It depends on what’s wrong: a battery replacement is a very different job from a controller or engine repair. Jamie diagnoses the problem first and tells you what the repair will take before he starts.

Do you repair brands other than Generac?

Yes. Jamie repairs Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Champion and Cummins standby generators.

Can you repair a generator someone else installed?

Yes. Jamie works on existing standby generators, including units installed by other companies.

Should I keep resetting the error on my generator?

No. Repeatedly clearing an alarm and restarting can hide the cause or make it worse. Note the code, leave it, and request a repair.

Is it worth repairing an older generator?

Often, yes. Many problems are batteries, sensors and wear parts. If a repair wouldn’t make sense for the age and condition of your unit, Jamie will tell you so and walk you through replacement.
